Standard PoE
IEEE 802.3af/at/bt instead of proprietary power-over-cable schemes.
Open-source low-voltage infrastructure
OpenBright PoE is a Canadian development project creating standards-based IEEE Power over Ethernet infrastructure for lighting, sensing and local building automation.
Development stage: pre-alpha architecture and pilot sourcing.
One Cat6 run can carry power, data and control to the edge.
Platform direction
The project is being designed around standard Ethernet, interoperable low-voltage devices and a clear boundary between OpenBright controls and third-party approved luminaires.
IEEE 802.3af/at/bt instead of proprietary power-over-cable schemes.
Core lighting and control behavior should keep working without a cloud service.
OpenBright aims to control and power compatible approved low-voltage lighting rather than reinvent every fixture.
Hardware, firmware, protocols, compatibility data and reference projects are intended to be openly documented.
Current architecture
The first node is being developed around IEEE 802.3at, with roughly 20 W of usable external load as an initial engineering target after internal losses.
Reference Project 001
The first real installation will be an occupied office pilot in British Columbia, Canada.
Manufacturers + contributors
OpenBright is currently evaluating 24 V and 48 V commercial low-voltage lighting, drivers, profiles and related components for interoperability testing.
